Microphone, camera and contacts

moj asks for each kind of access only when you need it. If you said no, you can allow it in the phone’s settings.

Why does moj ask for the microphone, camera and contacts?

Each for a single purpose, and only the first time you need it:

  • Microphone: for voice messages in the inbox, which you open with the microphone button at the bottom right. Choose “Speak”, hold the button down and let go when you are done.
  • Camera and photos: for pictures of bills, letters and notes. And for the QR code a child uses to set up their phone.
  • Contacts: for birthdays. moj reads only the name and birthday of the contacts you choose.

If you said no, you can allow access later in the phone’s settings. moj cannot turn it on by itself.

What does moj say when access is missing?

One line, right where things get stuck:

  • “This needs access to the microphone”
  • “This needs access to the camera”
  • “This needs access to your contacts. You can also add people by hand.”

The camera line also appears when access to your photos is missing. If you see it, check both.

When you scan the QR code for a child’s phone, no line appears. The scanner simply closes. Type the code in instead, which works just as well.

How do you allow access on the iPhone?

Everything is under “Settings” › “Privacy & Security”:

  • Microphone: “Microphone” › switch on moj.
  • Camera: “Camera” › switch on moj.
  • Photos: “Photos” › moj › choose the access.
  • Contacts: “Contacts” › moj › choose how much moj may see. With “Limited Access” you choose which contacts moj can see.

How do you allow access on Android?

Under “Settings” › “Apps” › moj › “Permissions”. Then tap “Microphone”, “Camera” or “Contacts”. For the microphone and the camera, “Allow only while using the app” is the right choice.

If that does not help, access may be switched off for the whole phone. You can turn it back on in the phone’s security and privacy settings. The privacy controls there have one switch for camera access and one for microphone access.

Checked in Google’s help for Android on 8 October 2026. Other makers sometimes name the menus differently.

What does moj read from your contacts?

Name and birthday, nothing else. Phone numbers, addresses and notes stay on the phone.

You get to your contacts from the “Add birthdays” card on “Today”. It disappears once your family has its first birthday or five entries. After that you add birthdays by hand, on the person’s page under “Family”. What moj does with birthdays is explained on Birthdays.

Short answers

Why does moj say “This needs access to the microphone”?

Because the phone has blocked moj from using the microphone. You can only allow access in the phone’s settings, not in moj.

Does moj read my whole address book?

No. moj reads only the name and birthday from your contacts. Phone numbers, addresses and notes stay on the phone.

Does moj listen in while the app is open?

No. The microphone is only on while you hold down the button under “Speak” in the inbox. When you let go, the recording is sent.

What do I do if the QR scanner closes straight away?

That means moj has no access to the camera. Just type the code in, or allow camera access as described here.
